Creating Your Own Run Commands

1. Win+R to open the Run dialog
2. Enter %windir% to open the Windows directory
3. Alt+F W S to open the File menu, choose the New menu item, then the Shortcut menu item
4. Go through the wizard to create a shortcut to the desired program
5. The name you give the shortcut is what you type in the Run dialog to start the program

Disable Startup Programs

For Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7: run (win + r) msconfig.exe.

For Windows 8.1, open Task Manager (CTRL + SHIFT + ESC) and go to Startup tab.

Free Disk Space

If space is a problem, have a look in:

C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

The contents of that folder are Windows Updates. They serve no purpose after installation and can safely be deleted. You could claim quite a bit of space by deleting those files. Before your rename the folder you must stop the service. Here is how:

• Start>Run
• type cmd and press enter
• type net stop wuauserv and press enter
• type rename c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old and press enter
• type net start wuauserv and press enter
• type exit and press enter

Verify that the new software distribution folder created when you restart the update service is approxiamtely 1.5 MB in size (standard files). Restart the computer and del the folder if you have no issues.

It is also safe to delete the PerfLogs folder

At an Admin Command Prompt Type: sfc /scannow > Press Enter

When scan is complete, restart computer.

Note: The scan reported negative results when I tried this yet, after restarting my computer, the update finished downloading and installed for me.

Backing-up Outlook Express

Back up Outlook Express

Copy the Store folder location:

• Start Outlook Express
• Click Tools, and then click Options
• On the Maintenance tab, click Store Folder
• In the Store Location dialog box, copy the store location

Copy the contents of the Store folder:

• Click Start, click Run, press CTRL+V, and then click OK
• Copy the folders
• Create a backup folder and paste

Export the Address Book to a .csv file, follow these steps:

• On the File menu, click Export, and then click Address Book
• Click Text File (Comma Separated Values), and then click Export
• In the Save In box, select the Mail Backup folder, and then click Save

Export the mail account to a file:

• On the Tools menu, click Accounts
• On the Mail tab, click the mail account that you want to export, and then click Export
• In the Save In box, select the Mail Backup folder, and then click Save

Export the newsgroup account to a file:

• On the Tools menu, click Accounts
• On the News tab, click the news account that you want to export, and then click Export
• In the Save In box, select the Mail Backup folder, and then click Save

Restore Outlook Express

Import messages from the backup folder:

• On the File menu, point to Import, and then click Messages
• In the Select an e-mail program to import from box, click Microsoft Outlook Express 5 or Microsoft Outlook Express 6, and then click Next
• Click Import mail from an OE5 store directory or Import mail from an OE6 store directory, and then click OK
• Click Browse, and then click the Mail Backup folder
• Click OK, and then click Next
• Click All folders, click Next, and then click Finish

Import the Address Book file:

• On the File menu, click Import, and then click Other Address Book
• Click Text File (Comma Separated Values), and then click Import
• Click Browse
• Select the Mail Backup folder, click the address book backup.csv file, and then click Open
• Click Next, and then click Finish
• Click OK, and then click Close

Import the mail account file:

• On the Tools menu, click Accounts
• On the Mail tab, click Import
• In the Look In box, select the Mail Backup folder
• Click the mail account that you want to import, and then click Open

Import the newsgroup account file:

• On the Tools menu, click Accounts
• On the News tab, click Import
• In the Look In box, select the Mail Backup folder
• Click the news account that you want to import, and then click Open

Sharing Public Folders

Windows 7

Open Network and Sharing Center and change from Public to Home network (cancel Create a Home Group).

Click on Change advanced sharing settings - All Networks - enable Sharing of Public folders.

To turn sharing off, simply change from Home to Public network then disable Sharing of Public folders.

Windows 8

Go to settings charm, click on your Network, click View Connection Settings, click your Network again, turn on Find devices and content.

Open Network and Sharing Center then click on Change advanced sharing settings - All Networks - enable Sharing of Public folders.

To turn sharing off, simply turn off Find devices and content then disable Sharing of Public folders.

Windows 7 & 8

WAIT. It takes a while for all the permissions in the public folders to be changed.

Be sure that the TCP/IP NetBIOS helper service is set to manual.
